Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about hiking the Cuilcagh Mountain boardwalk and our guided walks
The boardwalk itself is specifically designed for accessibility with a smooth, level surface and sturdy railings throughout. It's rated as an easy walk with minimal elevation change, making it ideal for anyone recovering from injury or managing mobility challenges. Our guides are trained to adjust the pace and can recommend modifications if you need them.
The full boardwalk loop is about 2.5 km and takes most groups 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how often we stop to take photos or chat about the landscape. We're not racing—we go at whatever pace keeps everyone comfortable and enjoying the experience.
The mountain can be windy and cooler than the lowlands, even in summer. We recommend layers—a base layer, a fleece or jumper, and a lightweight windproof jacket. Waterproof trousers are worth bringing even if the forecast looks decent. Check out our detailed gear guide for seniors for more tips on footwear and what to pack.
Not at all. We specifically design our walks for leisure hikers, not athletes. Most of our participants are 50+ and range from very active to just getting back into walking. The boardwalk has zero steep sections, and we take breaks whenever anyone needs them—there's no pressure to keep up with anyone else.
Absolutely. We run easy walks in Fermanagh and Cavan specifically for people getting started with outdoor activities. Our guides give confidence-building tips along the way, and the group atmosphere means newcomers always feel welcome. We've got everything from complete beginners to experienced walkers in most groups.
Late spring through early autumn (May to September) offers the best weather and longest daylight. Summer can be busy, so autumn is often perfect—clear days, fewer crowds, and the landscape turns beautiful shades of bronze and gold. Winter is doable but the boardwalk can be icy, so we'd recommend waiting unless you're comfortable with winter conditions.
